Hi, yes there is such a critter as the tall deck small block Chevy. It is a great thing too, as the nominal 9.025 deck height of a regular small chev is way short compared to MOST Ford engines, & does not make it easy for us Chevy guys to jam a decent crank in there!
The most common tall configuration block is a 9.325 deck height: .300" taller. This size block is available from Dart (ally or iron), Brodix (ally), even GM was in on the act when they were making the Rocket block a few years ago.
The problem with most of these blocks is that you have to run a few special parts: because the pan rails are spread .400", the cam is raised .391", plus the fact that the decks are further apart. To keep this info concise: you need a special oil pan, special cam (most of these blocks have big block Chev cam journal size), special timing belt drive or chain set, different oil pump driveshaft, different fuel pump shaft, spacers for the intake manifold.......
As you can see, it can be a drama, but if you want to make decent cubes easily, without butchering a standard block beyond recognition, it is a good way to go..... but the $$$ add up!
I happen to have an oil pan for one of these blocks for sale. It will be the right price for anyone thinking of building one of these. If interested, or you need any more info on setting one of these things up, don't hesitate to give me a call.
Thanks,
