I have a 1995 HSV GTS with a 350 stroker (304 base block) with hydraulic roller cam of unknown manufacturer or specs (the motor was rebuilt approx 35,000km ago by previous owner). The problem I am having is it keeps chewing out the oil pump drive gear! The first time the problem arose was when the motor was about 32,000km old, after investigation I found that the brass oil pump drive gear had all its teeth chewed off. As a result of impatience and ignorance I replaced the gear with a standard steel unit salvaged from a wrecked motor.....this lasted about 3000km. While installing this gear I noticed that there was a bit of play between the gear on the cam and the oil pump drive shaft gear, but as there is no way to adjust I thought this was an acceptable tollerance.

I have done a little research and found that COME racing reccommend a chromemoly oil pump drive gear, and Crane reccomend a teflon coated steel gear. As I suspect the cam is a Crane unit I purchased the Crane gear. After initial installation I have found that the meshing between the two gears is no better, so am stumped as to how to improve it.....and there lies my problem.

Any comments from people with experience with a similar problem would be greatly appreciated.
